Understanding the Flea Lifecycle

Successful flea control requires breaking the lifecycle at every stage. Fleas undergo complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. A single female flea can lay up to 50 eggs per day, dropping them wherever the host rests or sleeps. Eggs hatch into larvae within 2-14 days, depending on temperature and humidity. Larvae feed on organic debris and flea faeces before spinning cocoons and entering the pupal stage.

The pupal stage is the most challenging part of the lifecycle. Pupae can remain dormant for weeks or even months, waiting for vibrations, warmth, or carbon dioxide to signal that a host is nearby. This explains why flea problems often seem to disappear and then return with a vengeance — new adults emerge from previously hidden pupae long after the original infestation appeared resolved.

Most over-the-counter flea sprays, foggers, and powders only kill adult fleas on contact. They rarely penetrate deep enough into carpets, under furniture, or inside floorboard gaps to reach eggs, larvae, and pupae. Additionally, many shop-bought products contain low-strength insecticides that fleas have developed resistance to.

Treating only your pet is equally insufficient. While veterinary flea treatments kill adult fleas feeding on the animal, they do nothing to address the immature stages developing throughout your home. Without treating the environment, new adults continuously emerge and reinfest your pet — creating an endless cycle of frustration.

• Dispose of the vacuum bag or empty the cylinder immediately after vacuuming — preferably into an outside bin.
• Wash pet bedding, throws, and your own bedding at 60°C to kill eggs and larvae.
• Move furniture away from walls where possible to allow access to all floor areas.
• Treat pets with a vet-approved flea product on the same day as the home treatment.
• Vacuum again 2-3 days after treatment to remove dead fleas and stimulate any remaining pupae.

Signs of a Flea Infestation

Even if you have not seen a flea, these signs indicate an active problem:

• Your pet is scratching, biting, or grooming excessively — especially around the tail, belly, and neck.
• Small red bite marks on your own ankles, legs, or waist — often in clusters or lines.
• Tiny black specks in pet bedding or on carpets — flea faeces, often called "flea dirt."
• White, oval flea eggs visible in pet fur or falling onto dark surfaces when combing.
• Seeing actual fleas jumping on carpets, furniture, or your pet's coat.
