Moles are solitary creatures, highly territorial, and typically one mole is responsible for an entire area of molehills. Multiple molehills do not necessarily mean multiple moles.

Moles are active year-round but are most visible during spring and autumn when soil moisture makes tunnelling easier and earthworms are closer to the surface. Their tunnels are of two types: shallow feeding tunnels — which produce visible ridges — and deeper permanent tunnels used for travel and sleeping chambers.
