Mice are primarily nocturnal but may be seen during the day if the infestation is large or food sources are limited. They do not need much water — they obtain sufficient moisture from food alone — which allows them to survive in dry environments such as lofts and storage cupboards where rats would struggle.

• Nesting material — shredded paper, fabric, insulation, and dried plant matter gathered into small hidden nests.
• Scratching noises — light scratching and scurrying sounds in wall cavities, ceilings, and under floorboards, especially at night.
• Grease marks — dark smears along regular runways where mice brush repeatedly against walls.
• Ammonia-like smell — a strong, musky urine odour in enclosed spaces such as cupboards and lofts.
